First in, first out (FIFO)

Sterile processing definition

First in, first out is a stock rotation method in which the oldest items are used first. In sterile storage, newly processed items are placed behind older ones so older stock is dispensed first and nothing sits on the shelf indefinitely.

On the CRCST exam

Expect a scenario where new trays are placed in front of older ones. That violates FIFO.
