Event-related sterility

Sterile processing definition

Event-related sterility is the principle that a sterile package stays sterile until an event compromises it, rather than expiring after a set time. Events include tears, punctures, moisture, broken seals, dropping on the floor or improper storage. Packages must be inspected before use and anything compromised is returned for reprocessing.

On the CRCST exam
