Prion

Sterile processing definition

A prion is a misfolded protein that causes fatal brain diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Prions are unusually resistant to standard cleaning, disinfection and sterilization methods. Instruments used on patients with known or suspected CJD must be handled according to the facility's prion policy, which may require special cleaning and extended sterilization cycles or disposal.

On the CRCST exam

Know that prions resist normal processing and that the first step is to follow the facility's prion or CJD policy.
