Process challenge device (PCD)

Sterile processing definition

A process challenge device is an item designed to be at least as hard for the sterilant to reach as the hardest item in a load. It holds a biological and/or chemical indicator and is placed in the most challenging spot in the sterilizer. Results from a PCD give confidence that the rest of the load was exposed to sterilizing conditions.
